| Rainbow's End is a band that started back in the late 1970's as a back-up band to the Famous Irish Baritone, Sean Dunphy. Frank Smith had recruited his then son-in-law, Tom Roche and Tom's friend Gary to start things off. Gary left the band to join the armed services and Frank approached his son Tom about learning the bass guitar and joining the band for St. Patrick's day, 1981. Frank and Tom have been the constant members throughout the existance of the Rainbow's End. In the early years, Frank, Tom & Tom Roche palyed most of the pubs in Boston and the surrounding area with Frank playing the Banjo and Accoustic Guitar, Tom Roche playing the 12 String Guitar and Electric Guitar and Tom Smith on Bass Guitar. When needed, the boys recruited Mike Jansen, now playing with Tom Smith in S.N.M. Rainbow's End played several Boston pubs such as the Purple Shamrock, Kinvara, Chatham's Corner, Black Rose, Farragut House, Elliot's. Other frequently played bars outside of Boston were Kelly's in Revere, My Honey Fitz in Malden, The Irish Village at Cape Cod, Joyce's Family Bar in RI, Porthole Pub in Lynn, the Beach Comber in Quincy (including when it was called Nostalgia's), and many, many more. When Tom Roche left the band, Barbara Wizel joined adding Vocals and Keyboards. The focus of the band changed at that time to Dance Parties for Clubs and Lounges. Rainbow's End appeared at Kelly's Cork & Bull in Southie, Arlington IA (Irish American Club), Malden IA, Watertown IA, Billerica IA, Medford Sons of Italy (St. Patty's day party), Weymouth Elks, Melrose KofC, Billerica KofC, and many, many more. In April, 2003, Barbara announced her retirement and her plans to move to Florida. Although the band contineud with Frank, Tom & Mike, Frank was considering cutting back the number of four hour gigs. He began playing senior centers as a gesture of appreciation for the generation that struggled and survived a depression and world war, more than any other American generation before or since. Frank and Tom continue to play private parties adding Mike when possible. The music focus of Rainbow's End has transformed towards great old time sing-along songs. Frank speaks of how there were no TV's and radios were hard to come by when he was a teenager. As a result, a common pass time for Frank and his friends was to hang around someone's door step and sing these songs. Of course, the girls wanted to sing the songs, so the boys learned the songs so that they could continue to hang oute with the girls. And look what that turned into! | ||
